Episode 9: A Mermaid, A Peace Corps Friend, and My Aunt Nanete - Leanna, Shannon, and Meg
You and Me and Everyone We Know is an audio diary made by everyday people living through the coronavirus pandemic. In today's episode, we talk UX design, alter egos, Austin, Texas, fearing for our grandparents, ginger tea and pumpkin squares. In the first part of this episode we’re talking to, Leanna. Leanna and I met at Abilene Christian University, and we talked for the first time in nine years on March 20 when neither of our cities had yet to give shelter in place orders. We talked about Leanna’s strategies for getting through quarantine, but I was most interested in how her alter ego was going to spend all this free time?
In the second part of this episode we’re talking to Shannon. Shannon and I met when we boarded a plan with a few other volunteers to spend two years in Armenia. Shannon and I were assigned to the same Training village and spent three years living next door to each other on the side of a mountain. Shannon and I talked on March 19. We’re both Midwesterners now and when Shannon gets anxious about the pandemic, she looks outside herself to see how she can help…
In the last part of this episode we’re talking to my mom’s sister Meg, who I grew up calling Aunt Nanete. Aunt Nanete and I talked on March 15th, just a couple hours after I got a whim to ask my Facebook friends if anyone would make a podcast with me. At that point we barely knew anything about the pandemic. I was worried about Aunt Nanete who, last year, was diagnosed with PF, Pulminary Fibrosis. We talked about that, and about what advice she has as someone who lives with manic depression. Now, on the day we talked, I’d been thinking about trying to sew up a mask but there definitely weren’t any news stories about it. Still, I had this feeling my Aunt Nanete, forever the artist, had probably already whipped up a few.
Thank you for listening. And thank you to Leanna, Shannon and Aunt Nanete for coming on the podcast and for connecting with all of us.
