When Our Baby was Born

Our Baby Girl just turned 4 months old. Four months ago she arrived to planet Earth. Her birth was the most miraculous day of my life. I mean that in the literal way. It was the most miraculous thing that has ever happened. I have looked all over the world for signs of a god, a goddess, magic of any kind. I get close sometimes. A sunset is good. Especially when you get the chance to travel, to sit somewhere on the other side of the world from your hometown, and you see the same phenomenal sight – the colors,…

She discovered she has hands!

At her age, I didn’t know I had hands. I didn’t know the things existed at all. Or arms or elbows, knees, or toes. I didn’t know I had a body. My girl is now over 12 weeks-old. She has lived here on earth for 12 weeks. Over those past 12 weeks and on into the future, I am watching one of the great wonders of the world – seeing a baby discover that she IS. She exists, and she barely even knows it. The other day she found out she has hands. She made the discovery quietly, and for…

I love all the going to sleep things.

All of them. I love all the baby sleep things. I love how when we’re still on the couch the binky falls out of her mouth but her lips stay open in a precious, little pout. She tries it all and gets so frustrated, and…

Things you can do one-handed while holding your baby.

So my husband is back to work today, and me and baby girl are at home. It’s our first day back, and she wants to be held and held and held some more. Meanwhile dishes are by the sink, suitcases still packed and by the door, laundry on the basement floor, and plants that haven’t been watered are waving their sagging leaves at me for help. I am hoping her nap time will be hands-free after her post-travel stress dissipates, but until then, I have decided to compile a list of Things You Can Do One-Handed While Holding Your Baby….

My first trip to Texas with my Baby Girl

I have flown back to Texas dozens of times now. Year after year, I return from somewhere in the world to THE somewhere that held my little soul for all the years of my childhood. Having lived outside Texas now for nearly half my life, I notice it fresh every time – the rolling brushland, the easy mood, the crisp air, the yellow of winter grass and light blue of the big, wide winter sky. This past flight home was the first time I was introducing this wonderland to my kid. Our Baby Girl is nearing the 3 month mark,…
