Things you can do one-handed while holding your baby.

So my husband is back to work today, and me and baby girl are at home. It’s our first day back, and she wants to be held and held and held some more. Meanwhile dishes are by the sink, suitcases still packed and by the door, laundry on the basement floor, and plants that haven’t been watered are waving their sagging leaves at me for help. I am hoping her nap time will be hands-free after her post-travel stress dissipates, but until then, I have decided to compile a list of Things You Can Do One-Handed While Holding Your Baby….

I have a baby now.

I have a baby now. A baby.  The smallest kind of human being living in my house, hands no bigger than a half dollar. This is her: My husband and I waited for this magical girl for years. On our first date we talked about how much we both love family – our families in Texas, the family values we grew up with, the possible journey of making a family of our own. I married that sweet man, my best friend, two and half years ago. The house we bought that summer was one we chose because we could imagine…

Meeting Our Surrogate: The Morning After

I have a big long blog post in the works about what it is like to meet the woman who will carry your baby. For anyone who doesn’t know, I am a man, and my husband and I are unsurprisingly unable to carry our own children. It was a tectonic shift in our lives, though on the surface it felt simply like meeting new, amazing friends. More on that later. Let me tell you what…

The Hocus Pocus Halloween Dinner

This Halloween I have decided not to wear a costume. I love Halloween down deep in my soul, but I will be on a flight to the Middle East, and I don’t think it’s prudent to show up in a cape, white face and fangs with fake blood trickling from my lip. #goodtraveler Plus, if my Halloween heart pangs overwhelm, I’ll run to the airplane bathroom, wrap myself in toilet paper and take a selfie. #milehighmummy (OH MY GOD IS THIS MY MEME MOMENT?) But I love Halloween. My whole family loves Halloween. I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten a…

my mom is a wonder

My mother is a jeweler. She’ll sit through a couple hours of shows with baskets of beads and findings and thousands of other little pieces. With whip-quick hands she’ll snatch up a few kernels of turquoise, a few gems and a charm or twenty, and before you know it there are fifteen works of art waiting to dress the neck of as many Texas gals. I’ve been living in my home town these last couple of months post Peace Corps, and I still can’t get enough her creative spirit, nor the kitchen chats, floats in the pool, estate sale sweeps,…
