How I Felt On My First Father’s Day

She’s officially seven months. Sunday was Father’s Day. It was my first Father’s Day as a father. Today I saw her sit up on her own for the first time. She sat right up. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t celebrate. She didn’t look at me for approval. She didn’t cheer with glee. She simply just sat right up. Then she grabbed a purple block from a collection of blocks and stared at it. She is marvelous. She doesn’t know it, of course. She doesn’t know that when she sits up my heart completely stops, shatters into a million pieces,…

My First Birthday as a Dad

Today, I’m older. There is a lot more grey in my beard, and the white is advancing. I’m noticing it now in my bangs, though it mostly blends in with my blond hair. My shoulder seems to catch when I’m lifting something above my head. I’m older. I think I’m the hottest I’ve ever been. I can say that now, right? I’m not sure what anyone else thinks about how good looking I am, and, frankly, I’m not sure I care, which makes me feel even sexier. My husband tells me how handsome I look every day. What praise is…

Blissing Out

Absolute bliss. Total and absolute paradigm shifting happiness that will fly me to the moon. I am feeling it today, y’all. FEELING IT! Why? Why am I so happy?! So get this… I napped. I’ve been writing a lot about the big picture lately. “You need to find a way to enjoy your life,” I put in a post. “You have to take every chance you get to make your life the way you dream it to be,” I wrote. And I believe those things. Life is short. Dream, dream all the time, then do something to get you closer…

She discovered she has hands!

At her age, I didn’t know I had hands. I didn’t know the things existed at all. Or arms or elbows, knees, or toes. I didn’t know I had a body. My girl is now over 12 weeks-old. She has lived here on earth for 12 weeks. Over those past 12 weeks and on into the future, I am watching one of the great wonders of the world – seeing a baby discover that she IS. She exists, and she barely even knows it. The other day she found out she has hands. She made the discovery quietly, and for…

I love all the going to sleep things.

All of them. I love all the baby sleep things. I love how when we’re still on the couch the binky falls out of her mouth but her lips stay open in a precious, little pout. I love the way her sleepy arms fall away from her sides when I stand up. Sometimes she’ll absent-mindedly throw her binky across the room, and I love how she tries to find part of her hand to suck on. She tries the thumb, the side of her index finger, the end of her palm. She tries it all and gets so frustrated, and…
